86-90 Paul St, London EC2A 4NE
This beautiful luxury wine cellar sits perfectly at home within a chalet in the ski mountains of Verbier, Switzerland. The design direction was based on a dark smokey oak timber finish. This was inspired by our clients love for our Bespoke Home Wine Cellar project he visited in London.
Smokey deep grained timber lit with 5000k daylight led lighting has become a winning chose of design combination for many of our clients.
The addition of marble backdrops behind the bottles adds further to the luxury wine cellar theme.
The absence of 90° adjoining structural walls behind the cabinetry set the complexity of achieving design symmetry without reducing the size of the space. The widest wall in the space was selected as the central focal point of the display. It was also the deepest part of the cabinetry in which the overhead coolers could be concealed. This was also the furthest wall from the entering doors making it the most sensible area to accommodate the deep storage required for wine cases.
The dark Oak veneer is pressed and lacquered onto moisture resistant board that will ensure the longevity of the woodwork. Natural untreated wood, while aesthetically pleasing, will deteriorate in a cold damp wine cellar environment. The Structural timber walls supporting the heavy pull out wine case shelves are finished in a ply core for strength.
Note, the horizontal champagne bottles on brushed steel rods featured on the left and right walls of the main centre display. Behind the bottles sits a honed finished marble lit with vertical LEDs. The vertical LEDs ensure the entire slab is illuminated from floor to ceiling to eliminate dark spots.
Thick tension tested brushed steel rods ensure the heavy champagne bottles do not sag.
Every area of this luxury wine cellar display is illuminated with 5000k waterproof lighting.
The presence of lighting is key to every Wine Display so we use plenty of it.
The absence of lighting in all areas will leave black spots throughout the Wine Room.
The lighting, however, must be controllable with a dimming system so it can be tuned to create the right balance. Different themes should be used from time to time and not left on continually. Long term, the indirect lighting can be left on at a dimmed level. Undershelf lighting focused directly on the bottles, should be used at a low level and only when required.

Temperature controlled wine storage finishes -
The most common issue found with modern wine wall designs is fluctuating storage temperatures.
The door design and build is fundamental to maintain stable wine temperatures.
Frameless glass, as an example, cannot maintain an air tight environment within any temperature controlled wine storage system.
The huge mild steel doors on this wine display however, comfortably maintain air pressure and temperatures. This has been ensured by the gasket sealed sub-frame design. The doors close into the sub-frame, resting on the internal gaskets that create the air tight seal.
As a result, the internal overhead concealed wine refrigeration system, cycles on and off less. This improves the wine stability and the electrical consumption.
The full width internal shelving has a bold high gloss acrylic finish.
Floating shelving needs to be strong and durable to ensure no sagging.
Counter weight supports within the surrounding cabinetry structure ensure this durability. The shelves span the width of two meters and support the weight of approximately twenty-five + wine bottles. The floating wine shelves also incorporate LED lighting that illuminates the shelf below.
The presence of lighting is key to every Wine Display so we use plenty of it.
It took a whopping twelve 250 watt led drivers to power this luxury temperature controlled wine storage.
The onyx back lit wall material requires specific attention to the positioning of the LED lights set behind it. If positioned too close you will see dark lines between the LED strips. If positioned too far away, the onyx material will not give off a uniform glow. Rather you will see dark patches due to the lack of light transmission.
The lighting is all fully controllable from the clients mobile phone. Allowing dimming and scene setting linked in with the rest of the space lighting.
